Proceeds benefit food programs to prevent hunger

OMAHA (June 19, 2017) – Proceeds from Pinot, Pigs & Poets reached $315,000, event organizers announced Friday. In what has become one of Omaha’s premier wine and food events, Pinot, Pigs & Poets benefits the weekend and afterschool food programs of Omaha nonprofit Completely KIDS

Pinot, Pigs & Poets drew more than 350 guests for the sold-out eighth annual event at Happy Hollow Club on June 1.

“Pinot, Pigs & Poets connects the best of the pinot noir wine industry with the best of the area’s culinary scene,” said Jody Carstens, Pinot, Pigs & Poets co-chair. “Thanks to the tremendous efforts of our committee, sponsors, dedicated volunteers, wineries, chefs and poets, PPP is a landmark event in our city. We’re proud to know that the proceeds help to fight childhood hunger, a devastating reality that so many in our community face.”

Highlights of the event included the announcement of the winner of the Taste of Elegance chef competition, sponsored by the Nebraska Pork Producers Association, and vintner competition winner. The 2017 Taste of Elegance Competition Chef Par Excellence was awarded to Chef Tim Nicholson, of The Boiler Room. He will attend the 2018 Pork Summit at the Greystone Campus of the Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena, Calif., for his winning dish of pork tongue pastrami, caraway polenta, mustard greens, pickled shallots and sourdough. Bien Nacido Vineyards’ 2012 Santa Maria Valley edged out more than 50 other wines for the top pinot noir of the evening. Master Sommelier and Bien Nacido Estate Brand Manager Will Costello accepted the award.

Other Taste of Elegance participants were: Chef Kyle Anderson, Baela Rose; Chef John Benton, The Venue Restaurant & Lounge; Chef Clayton Chapman, The Grey Plume; Chef Jared Clarke, Timber Wood Fire Bistro; Chef Cedric Fichepain, Le Voltaire French Restaurant; Chef Paul Kulik, Le Bouillon; Trish Liakos, Market Basket; Chef Johnny Lopez, Happy Hollow Club; Chef Dario Schicke, Dario’s Brasserie; and Chef Enzo Zurlo, Enzo’s Italian.

Poets from the Nebraska Writers Collective served up a menu of interactive slam poetry for guests throughout the evening.

Due to the event’s success, Completely KIDS has been able to increase the number of children enrolled in the Weekend Food Program, which provides healthy, child-friendly food to take home every Friday. The weekend and after-school food programs fit within the organization’s mission to educate and empower kids and families to create a safe, healthy, successful and connected community.

Completely KIDS program participant Dayanara, 11, said there are times when money is tight and food becomes scarce.

“It’s important because it helps my mom,” Dayanara said about the Weekend Food Program. “If we don’t have it, then a lot of times it’s in the bags.”

Pinot, Pigs & Poets will return to Happy Hollow Club on May 30, 2018.
